My Approach to College Advising

Professional Background

Welcome to Finding Your College Fit! My name is Melissa Cochran, and I have worked in education for more than twenty years. I spent most of my career teaching at High Tech High in San Marcos where I also worked as our school’s Internship Coordinator and supported our Director of College Advising. In these various roles, I developed a college and career project for our juniors, helped them create balanced college lists, supported students with college essay writing and facilitated college application workshops for our seniors. I planned day and overnight college visits for students in all grade levels and prepared juniors and seniors for their internship experiences. It was during my time at HTH that I discovered my passion for supporting students in finding their chosen path for life after high school.

Admissions Experience

In addition to my experience in K-12 education, I recently spent four years supporting undergraduate admissions at a highly selective public research university renowned for its engineering, computing and science programs.  This gave me incredible insight into the world of admissions and the holistic review process from the perspective of a top-tier institution. I have read thousands of essays and applications, and I understand the various factors that impact the admissions process.

The Road to Becoming an IEC

Although I loved my time working in admissions, I missed working with students directly so I decided it was time to start my own business. I am still a teacher at heart, and I decided to pursue my passion of supporting students and their families through the application process. My goal is to simplify the process for students and alleviate stress along the way. This process can be overwhelming, so let me help guide you so that you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.

My Philosophy and Approach to College Counseling

It is important to understand my approach and philosophy to the college search process prior to working with one another. I chose the name Finding Your College Fit because fit is more about a name or reputation. It’s not necessarily where you go to college but what you do when you get there. There are thousands of colleges in the United States, and your job is to find those that fit your academic, social-emotional and financial needs. To find those that truly are a good fit for you, it takes time to reflect on your needs and interests while engaging in active research. My goal is for high school students to become more independent and responsible as they take the lead navigating their chosen college path. My job is to support your reflective process, help you navigate the college search, research and suggest colleges for your list, and help you plan the application process while providing feedback along the way. I will work predominantly with the student while facilitating and maintaining communication with parents/guardians throughout our time together.
